Yes, I think the media spends far too much time on the "horse race" so to speak and not enough time on examining the issues so that we can have a national dialogue. I really feel that our country needs to come together to solve all the difficult problems facing us, and reducing every issue to the political consequences or the "us vs. them" bottom line is extremely counterproductive.
And to pick up on what others have said about ratings, I do think the downfall of true journalism in our media began when the news divisions were put under the entertainment divisions and expected to get good ratings and be a revenue center. Prior to that, the networks allowed the news divisions to lose money because it was considered a public service. People forget that the airwaves are owned by US and are given to the networks for free. I think we should insist on better reporting and journalism.

Remove your head from the clouds. The US media has reasons for everything they report and none of those is to make you any wiser at the end of the day. The US government's agendas and propaganda are behind nearly every Fox, CNN etc., story you hear, and your best bet is to go to other (outside the US) sources for news to at least get another perspective and other facts on international stories. Don't kid yourself, the US media doesn't give the slightest toss about telling you the truth, they wouldn't be allowed to exist if they tried. For example, Aljazeera wanted to have broadcasts in the US and the US gov't said they would absolutely not be permitted to because it would spread "terrorist propaganda". By that what they mean is that it would be a different perspective about the goings ons of this little war we're fighting. The US would rather have their own mouthpieces be the teller of their fairy tales and keep you in the dark, whether they live here or not, they know the truth, why should you?

Absolutely, the media is driven by ratings. They can put anything in a light that doesn't truly convey what is really going on. E.g. Many stories about catholic priests abusing young boys gives the impression that there's a majority of catholic priests who aren't being true to their calling, while the church covers up the problem. Look, this is just an extreme example, but the media does cause divisions. They are rating-driven.

Unfortunately, this is what it has come to in America. Started with Clinton, as best I can recall and has gotten real bad in the past several years. |
Not every single one, but far too many are more concerned by what will happen to their political career than they are about America - you and me. The media exaggerates, twists, does selective reporting and general misleads us on many things. This, however, I am afraid is more true than not.

Well, if everyone's all nice and happy, it'd be boring, wouldn't it? Tragedy and scandal are the things that we humans are interested in. If there's a conspiracy, even better. Nobody wants to listen to, "Well, they did their best, let's forgive them and sing a Barney song!" Instead, we want to assign blame to somebody for the bad things that occur. Let's just ignore the media. They are people that try to make their living by getting higher ratings, and to get higher ratings, they need to be interesting. What's interesting? Scandal! It just goes round and round...

Political bickering is the lifeblood of media. They incite the politicians to fight each other so that they will have news to tell everyday so that people will watch or read their news for more paid advertisements.

The media are closet communists that want to divide the country. The communist doctrine of divide and conquer is alive and well contrary to denials by them.
