i think in the end it came down to 2 things....age and money.

Dirk is the youngest of the three and therefore has the most upside. he is an inside outside threat and gives opposing teams nightmares when it comes to match ups (u cant put a big on him cause theyre too small, you cant put a small player on him cause he can shoot right over them)

Nash was offered more money in phoenix. Mark Cuban didnt want to match the offer and let nash go. they recovered well though by drafting harris and signing terry. im sure thoe 2 acquisitions helped make the choice cuban made.

finley i think is the oldest and with the contract he had it probably wasnt working for them with the talent they had around them. no point paying someone more then 10 million to come off the bench. i think he was waived with the one time "Alan Houston Clause" which allowed every team to waive one player with no fine....i think.

in the end the Mavs made a pretty good choice. Dirk was given the opportunity to lead and to develop as a player. nash has shown that he can still play at a high level, he has shown that the money thrown at him was well worth his services. but for the mavs, they got harris and terry...so im guessing theyre happy. as far as finley, the mavs got some perimeter scorers to fill the voids so he isnt missed

the dyanimc trio was broken up, but all have gone on with their careers and are succeeding in their own rights. the mavs, suns and spurs are all legitimate title contenders which means at last one of the trio will get the trophy.

Mark Cuban is a genius, and he knew that even if he let Nash go, the Mavs wouldnt hurt from it. And he wasn't willing to pay more than Phoenix. Look at them now, better than when they had nash, and Terry is doing a good job at the point guard spot, coming up big in some clutch times.

And Finley, he was simply getting old and wouldn't work with Josh Howard becoming the All-Star that he is today...and they have Stackhouse and Harris in the backcourt. Finley just wouldn't be of any use in Dallas anymore.

So choosing Dirk over Nash and Finley was a smart move...

Go Mavs!

I think they knew that Nowitzki had a great future. They thought that Nash probably does not have a future as bright as Dirk's. Finley, well he is an aging basketball player and they also thought that he was on the decline. I think Nash and Nowitzki are both late bloomers. I don't think that they mesh well together considering that they both turned out to be superstars. Well, with that said, do you really think they made a mistake?

Dallas: 54-11
Phoenix: 50-16

phx offered more money than dallas and mark cuban didnt match the offer. dirk still had a contract and finley isnt really all that. i mean everyone can make fun of cuban for trading nash but the mavs havent exactly fell apart

Mark Cuban was not going to pay to retain Steve Nash when PHX offered him that 60 million dollar deal. The philosophy on most players, but especially guards, is to not overpay them as they approach age 30 and beyond, because typically their skills will experience a steady (or sharp) decline.
Finley just didn't fit into the equatoin anymore, partly due to his deteriorating talent.
Niwitzki was the youngest among them, and the guy with the most star potential.

Mark Cuban knows what he's doing. He chose Dirk because, just what he said in The Late Show with David Letterman, during Finals period, "Why can't he (Steve Nash) play like an MVP for us? and where is he now? He's home watching."

He's right. I think it depends somehow on the relationship between the coach and the player. maybe nash just didn't fit in with Don Nelson's coaching. and he fitted better with D' Antoni. and Dirk fitted better with Nelson, and eventually, Avery Johnson.

Because Nash is over rated and it was a good decision. Have the Suns won anything ever?

Nowitzki is a 7 ft guy that can play like he is 6'5''. Add that to the fact that he is younger than the other players that you mentioned.

phx offered more money to nash than dallas. i think it was like 60 mill and dallas didnt pay up, but they got terry.
i think finley just didnt fit in because of stack and howard plus he is on the decline.
