i have a crappy dell with 512mb ddr ram in a single slot. can i put 2 x 128mb ddr ram in the other two slots or do i have to use a 512. it's just for economic reasons as 2 x 128 is cheaper than 1 x 512 and will there be any performance difference between the two set-ups?

If you go to http://www.crucial.com you can input your make and model of dell computer and it will tell you exactly if you can match or use mixed pairs of RAM. Edit: I saw your comment about 256. I see. newegg has 1x512 for cheaper than 2x256 right now i believe. if not cheaper, then $1 or $2 more.

Go to the following link, http://www.crucial.com/uk they can check your computer on line. They will then tell you the correct memory type, size, and recommend the most suitable amount. They are not the cheapest but it,s worth spending a little more as they guarantee that their ram will be compatible with your motherboard and give a great warranty, in some cases a lifetime warranty. You can also order on line. Hope this helps.

You are Always better off using a Matched Pair of memory sticks than to mix and match...Yes there will be a performance issue doing mix and match...that's even if the mobo lets you do that...
