Is it because they are cute? Because they are certainly not endangered.

Most animal rights activists (the leadership, I should clarify) don't care as much about the animals as they do about restricting the freedoms of humans. Think of them as anti-human, not pro-animal.

It helps (a lot) that seals are cute. It makes the hunting of seals seem cruel. But it's no more inhumane than hunting anything else. Very few of the same activists who would get upset at killing seals would bat an eyelash if we were talking about killing roaches.

Whether it is cruel to kill animals or not is another issue. It could be argued that since animals have nerve endings they can feel pain, but then it can also be argued that there are quick and painless ways of killing animals.

It's okay if you're native in Canada! Just like fishing licenses and all kinds of other things! If you are another culture, it's against the law and you could get fined or go to jail for it! I understand that the UN human rights commission has recognized natives in countries around the world as a separate race to be treated differently than everyone else. Does this mean that it is okay to violate other peoples' rights and cause the extinction of various species? My ancestors may have been the first people on earth so why do I not have special rights and treatment too? Is this ethical? Is this moral?

Because it involves the killing of an animal! Why else would they be upset?Every year, more than 330,000 baby harp seals—most less than 1 month old—are killed in the most barbaric manner for their fur. This carnage takes place with the blessing of the Canadian government. The Canadian government sanctions the vicious destruction of hundreds of thousands of infant harp seals just to satisfy the vanity of a few callous people who still want to wear seal fur.

The way these people go about it is sick. They beat them with clubs until they lay in a pool of their own blood... it's pretty nasty.
