There is a play in game that is played by 2 teams whoif they winget to play a #1 seed so after the playin game is over there are 64 teams not 65.
For example Nagria won the playin game this year and had to play Kansas in the first round but lost.

The tournament went to 65 from 64 when the Mountain West Conference was formed and became eligible for an automatic bid. Since the big conferences did not want to give up an at-large bid to accomodate the addition of the MWC to the other 30 conferences that already got automatic bids, it was decided to keep the number of at-large bids at 34 and add a play-in game for the two "worst" teams to make the tournament.

The play-in game was added in 2001.

the directors of the tournament have decided that two teams are equal and they need to play a game to get into the tournament...its called the "Play-In Game"...its just as it says if you win your in...if you lose your out...thats why there are 65 teams...
