Anyone have any really good ideas on how to stay motivated at work? I have an office on my own and sometimes I find it very difficult to stay on the job. Playing on the internet (like I am now lol) is much more attractive. Can anyone give me good motivational tips?

Make goals - short, medium and long-term goals. You can use these so you can see your progress easily. A long-term strategy is important so you can see where all the small daily tasks are leading to.

Recognition is one of the big factors in personal motivation. Working at home is difficult, because you often don't have this. Keep a network of contacts, or keep friendly with people in the office, so that you can get feedback if you need it.

Network - you need to get out and about sometimes, so if there are local business meetings on or industry presentations, go to them. Networking can also help you gain new contacts, so make sure you take some business cards with you.

Creatvity always helps self-motivation. Set aside time regularly to brainstorm about your work. New ideas and thoughts often give a huge boost.

I also have a mudane job. I work as a sales assistant. I have to do a lot os mudane and bland thing each day, e.g stand at the front of the store welcoming in each customer, saying good bye to each customer whilst putting all the items in size order, smallest through to largest, putting away rejects from the fitting room, checking for security tags/missing tags, cleaning the surfaces of all the shelves daily, fitting room duty....the list goes on. I get told off if I am standing still but have to force myself to do all the tasks (yes at the same time as this is what head office call 'multi tasking')
Oh an one last thing, unless over the staff radio that everyone can hear, no talking to other staff or going into their ares unless for work/to help a customer. "your not being paid to chat"

I get for my duties: minimum wage. £5.35 an hour.

I have a degree, but lack the experience required to get work (I need computer aided design skills and cant afford to get these at college)

I have to motivate myself so I do this by daily applying to other jobs that are not shop assistant based. Though I have been doing this for a year now with not much hope, I still go into work thinking- when I get home I could find I have another job! this could be my last job!

of course, the magic envelope hasnt arrive yet.

-doesnt mean it wont though!

Two things can help.
1. Write down your daily and weekly goals and the steps to get there. Make it a point of only rewarding yourself with free play AFTER you achieve your daily goals.

2. The best way to stay motivated is to discover the WHY you are doing something. Often we don't really know the why. Or even after answering why we have not actually discovered the true why.

The 5 Why's. Ask yourself WHY you want the job you have. You may say money. Okay, but is it the money you want or what it can get you. Ask WHY you want the money. It may be so that you can get the car you want. WHY do you want the car? So you don't have to bum a ride everywhere. WHY don't you want to bum rides? So you can feel independent.

Do this type of self questioning until you get 5 WHYs deep. When you get to your 5th why, write this down on paper and post on your bathroom mirror, on your PC monitor, on your dashboard, in front of your notebook/calendar. Even wad up a copy into a ball and stuff it into your pocket to give you a noticeable lump. This way every time you think about the out of place wad of paper, you will think about your 5th WHY, which will sustain your daily motivation.

Sounds like you're bored with your job, and that makes motivation difficult. I suggest starting a home based business. This is something you can do while continuing with your job until you either meet or surpass your income. You might be surprised at how quickly you become motivated when you are earning money in your own company!
It's what I do, and I will never look back, far too exciting!

Try planning out what you'd like to do with your money once you've earned it. Then you have a goal to reach for every day at work and that much more of a reason to try harder. The best way to succeed anything in life is to set goals, by doing this you stay motivated and thus strive for perfection.

My advice to you:

Set some short term and long term goals for your position at work as well as the money you earn.

Best of luck to you! Hope that helps you in some way.
