Is the cost of living comparable to anywhere in Canada? Is it easier for a non US citizen to move there than to move to another state? Is it overall a nice place to live?

I have a cousin that is going to be moveing there next july, she is going because the college that she goes to offers that anyone who wants to move there will get all of their student loans paid plus a $5000 moving bounus, plus they have a job lined up for her and a place to live also, she is majoring as a teacher so she will be a teacher in alaska for 2 years, but she is mainly going to get her student loans which total around 20,000 dollars paid off. its also very cold up there and their seasons are totally diffrent they have 6 months where the sun is up all day and 6 months where it is dark all day long. people use alumminum foil on thier windows to keep out the sun. and i thought that i heard that if you volunteer to live there you dont have to pay federal taxes. but im not sure if that is true or not

Well let's see... I live just North of Anchorage (the largest city in Alaska), and I have lived here for well, a very long time. I find Alaska is the only place I feel home at.

The mountains, rivers, the wildlife in your back yard, and lots to do for everyone... but...

Alaska is big; more than twice the size of Texas, and has 5 different geographic regions. So depending on where you are talking about, you'll get a different response as to cost of living.

Anchorage and Fairbanks are no different in most things than any other cosmopolitan area, ,in fact some things are cheaper. The housing market right now is a buyers market, but I think that will change in a short while.

Picture Winnepeg, or Calgary, Edmonton; only we don't have the taxes you do. We have no state income tax, the big cities have no sales tax, and those communities that do, it is a marginal tax.

As far as moving here? It is no different than anywhere else in the states.

Is it a nice place to live? Oh yeah!

So come on up for a visit to the Greatland and see for yourself.

Because the pay is higher the cost of living is higher. If you live in Anchorage Alaska they now have Walmarts and J C Penny's Walgreen's ect..It is beautiful ..never too but gets very cold in winter long dark night in winter and long sunny days in the summer. Over 20 hours of each one.Schools are more lay back ect. Rules are slack in schools. People seem happy
