It is a trauma induced phobia. Anytime someone changes their actions, or they are of an extreme nature, it can be a phobia. Its also a defense mechanism from said trauma. Try getting a friend to bring their small gentle dog around for awhile and see if it can be overcome.

A phobia is a phobia regardless of the cause. Although the definition usually includes the term "irrational fear", that doesn't preclude the phobia starting from a real, traumatic event.

I believe it would. Phobias usually occur when you have had a traumatic incident and from there the phobia can develop.

if it causes them to change thier behaviour. Anxiety is one thing. I can go to someones house for a party and be anxious around the dog of the house, but if I dont go to the party, thats another thing.
Fears are reasonable. Phobias are not.

I think it would be. Most peoples phobias do stem from an event in their lives. I think this one could be overcome with a little work.
