Ok. So I was playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion today and I run quite a few mods so it freezes up from time to time and it froze like which the solution is to just restart my computer. Well I just killed the power and went to eat dinner. When I got back I turned on the computer and it went through all the normal booting procedures but just when it should show the normal desktop it shows a totally black screen with no mouse yet I can boot into safe mode with no problem. No idea what's wrong. I do not think that it is a display setting problem. I've been using this monitor and graphics card for months at the settings with no problems.

Use complex terms. I'm not a n00b. :P

Poster 1 - Restore point did nothing. Will try the Windows Disk repair thing.

Poster 2 - I tried reinstalling the video drivers with the latest ones. (Already had the latest ones anyway for a while now.) Nothing.

Poster 3 - That's not my problem. The black screen appears after the Windows logo.

Poster 4 - Yes I killed the power. I know it's not good to do but once shouldn't have done anything and besides the whole computer was frozen so it's not like I could have properly shutdown the computer.

Ok so apparently something as simple as having a blank CD-RW in one of your drives can keep your computer from booting correctly.

Poster 5. Yes my problem is solved. No it shouldn't be the boot order because my boot order is FDD, HDD1, HDD2, Optical1, Optical2. In case I didn't state it clearly enough when that disk is in the drive it goes through all the normal boot procedures including showing the Windows logo and just when you think it is going to show your desktop it doesn't. Just a nice black screen with no mouse and no amount of button pushing brings up anything.

P.S. I don't care what the "best answer" is for this question because none of these answers are the answer to my problem.

Yep having a CD might do that because your PC will try and boot from CD depending on your boot device order in your BIOS. So does this mean the problem is solved or not? If you can't even get the POST screen, it's probably your gfx card. If you can get the POST, it's most likely a problem related to drivers. Try re-installing drivers in safe mode.

While in safe mode, uninstall the graphics driver then reboot, the basic 16 bit video driver supplied by XP should give you video in normal mode, then re-install the video driver.
WELL TRY THIS. (in safe mode obviously Do msconfig and do the services tab and startup tabs. Uncheck everything you can and that will allow the comp to start up. Or, does your mother board have onboard graphics? revert back to that for now and do trouble shooting from there. Other than that I dont know. Good luck. IS YOUR BOOT UP SEQUENCE IN THE WRONG ORDER? CHECK YOUR BIOS AND CHECK YOUR BOOT SEQUENCE. IS THE CD/DVD DRIVE THE FIRST BOOT DEVICE? IF SO CHANGE IT TO HDD1 OR HDD0. GLAD YOU FOUND THE PROBLEM THOUGH.

if you know how to uninstall your graphics card...
boot to safe mode.
uninstall the graphics card from your device manager...restart normally if you can...if not restart again in safemode with networking
do not reinstall yet, click cancel on any hardware wizard...
get the newest drivers for your graphics card from the manufacture or support site.
restart and allow wizard to install from specific location..(where the new drivers are)...if your drivers came in an install program then cancel the wizard and run the manufacture program instead.

ps. you typed 'killed the power' did you just push the power button untill the pc was off?
if so...DONT DO THAT!!! (unless you absolutely have to, absolutely!)
your pc needs to follow a shutdown procedure...
you can set your power button to perform a proper shutdown...but if you held it for 4 seconds to just turn it off, thats not 'best practice'
