I am a native Californian and I say dinner. My grandmother was from Georgia and she called it supper. Here we have breakfast, lunch and dinner; with dinner being the main meal of the day. In the south they have breakfast, dinner and supper. Dinner is the main meal of the day and supper is a lighter meal similar to our lunch.

Supper is usually a later meal (say, after 7 or 7:30pm) and dinner is an earlier meal - usually heavier fare. I say supper, as we usually dine pretty late, and it usually consists of salads and such.
