Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space and change. It developed, through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning, from counting, calculation, measurement, and the study of the shapes and motions of physical objects.
A number is an abstract entity used originally to describe quantity. At least since the invention of complex numbers, this definition must be relaxed. Preserving the main ideas of "quantity" except for the total order, one can define numbers as elements of any integral domain.

Numbers are symbols used to specify a quantity of something. Math has been in use for thousands of years in one form or another. Math is a language of numbers, and symbols by which questions are asked, and answers are explained, or specified.
