make sure all your files are saved and backed-up. then you need to do a master reset on the device. you achieve that by plugging in the hotsync cable to the phone, but NOT to the computer. next you take the stylus out and get ready for the tricky part! you have to press the red power button, the ''up arrow'' on the phone, the hot sync button, AND use the stylus to press the small reset button next to the battery all at the same time. it's very difficult to do, and would best be done with some help from someone else. it took me over a half hour to get it done right the first time. if you see a multi-colored band at the top of the screen when trying this, keep trying. eventually the screen will go black for 15 seconds, then ask if you want to erase all data. you want to click on yes. then it will have you reformat the phone, and it will work fine!
