As said above except for one thing, hibernation is not the same as turning off. Hibernating is a sleep mode and does not completely shut the system down.

Assuming you don't want to use the power management in windows you could just schedule a tasks and use the shutdown command. The command would be something like shutdown -s -t 0. Type that in notepad and save it as shutdownPC.bat. The click start, RUN, type tasks. New task, select your batch file and schedule it. I'm not sure of the reason behind your question. I know some software has the option to shutdown a PC after it done completing a task, like Nero. Good luck

Yes you can have your computer set to turn off by itself. If you go to your desktop and right click on it go to properties. Then go to Screen Saver, there you will see a button that says Power. Click on it. Go to hibernation and click enable hibernation. Then go back to the power schemes tab. Go to where it says system hibernates: and chose how long you want your computer to stay on before it shuts down. Then click apply then ok and your done. Hope this helps you. Good Luck

you can do it in vista to turn off at a certain time

on xp you can change the settings (details to follow) to make the computer turn off by itself when it is left alone for a certain period of time. to do this:

click start - click control panel - click performance and maintenance - click power options

from there you can change various options to turn various parts of the computer off like monitor and hard drives (this is the turn off option)
