My parents were very upset and disappointed. I was extremely involved on campus the semester I had a low GPA. I knew that my grades were not going to be the best but I had no idea how bad they would actually be. So i told them before my grades arrived that they shouldn't expect excellent grades. But when the grades came they were very upset. They told me that I have to pay them back for that semester. I tried to explain to them that I learn a lot about myself that semester. I tried to say that I learned about my limits and how to judge situations better, etc.
You should try to talk to your instructors to see how you can get your grades up but you have to be honest with your parents if you tell them ahead of time they won't be as upset.

I think it matters how much you're trying. If you're out partying a lot, then they probably will be pretty heated. However, if you show that you're trying to do well then they should be more lenient towards the issue.
As for me, I did extremely well in high school, but I took too many courses my first semester, expecting to rock them all out. As a result my General Chemistry grade just kept sinking. But, my parents didn't really get mad at me, because they knew it bothered me more than anything else. Plus, when they called I was often at the library, so they knew I was working.
The surrounding details are what will decide how they react. If they know you're putting in a moderate amount of effort I don't think they'll chastise you too much. More than likely they will try to encourage you to do better in the class. (They don't want you to fail any more than you do.)

Which one is worse: making them mad or disappointing them? I can alway handle the anger but letting them down because it was something I could have prevented felt horrible. They are the ones that supported you all of your life, they helped you when you needed it and are probably still assisting you in college. You are an adult, you made your decision and it caused you to be in this predicament. Hope you can get your act straight and get out of failing. If not, be responsible and learn from your mistake. If you did learn from it, tell your parents what went wrong and what your going to do in the future to prevent it. They'll be happy about that.

My mother was so furious that she actually wrote me a four page letter telling me how disappointed and angry she was. She NEVER wrote to me prior to that, or after. Not sure why she was that aggravated since I was paying for most of my schooling myself...
