At a social function, do you mean dressed-up?

If so, you would not be drinking Beer from a can; you would be using a glass, instead.

No pinkie extension is necessary.

The only acceptable social function to extend your pinkie, would be high tea.....and that doesn't really happen around these parts.....so I can't say that I have.....but......I have been known, on occassion, to extend my pinkie at the most inopportune times, such as when scratching thy nose.......this leads to poking oneself in thy eye....and I havta tell you.......that smarts!

ah, none that I've ever been at...seems kinda contradictory, if you are relaxed enough to drink right out of the can, I don't think pinkie-positioning is important.
