you can the webiste below if it's just the one computer you are using. Otherwise I normally go to the command prompt. Star Menu --> Run --> cmd -- OK

Type in ipconfig and Enter.. should tell you what ip address is assigned to you computer. If you're getting 169.254.x.x then it's a generic one your computer assigns itself. Meaning turn off you Firewalls and internet security software..

Not sure what it is exactly that you're trying to do though

usually you would get an ip address automatically assigned to you for internet connections, but if thats not what youre looking for:

you can click the connection icon on the bottom left (usually its two computer screens or one computer screen with green waves if you use wireless) and click properties. click on ip/tcp protocol and click properties again. you can then set your own ip address there

If you just want to know what IP your computer you are on is....in my case, I went to ask.com. What is my IP address ?and it came up immediately. May not be able to use this info, but sometimes I need to know and it is easy to find.
