I guess it depends upon one's definition of a freedom fighter. It's a bit like asking when a stream becomes a river or when a pond becomes a lake. One may be able to use textbook definitions to describe the characteristics of a "terrorist," however, ultimately a terrorist is a label most likely to be used by those who "terrorists" oppose.

The US labelled the Mujahadeen as "freedom fighters" while the Soviets called them "terrorists." Osama bin Laden was a key figure that funelled money and arms to the Mujahadeen on behalf of the US and then he was a "freedom fighter" and an ally against the red scourge. Now what is he?

I'd be willing to bet that if today's lexicon was in use 200 years ago then the American revolutionaries and George Washington probably would have neem deemed terrorists by the British. In the 1860's I'm sure both sides would have labeled each other as terrorists. During the French revolution, who were the terrorists? What was Ghengis Khan and the Golden Horde - were they terrorists? How about the Bolsheveiks and the Korenskys - were they terrorists or liberators? I guess it all depends upon who wins and who is in power. If the British won the American war for independence Paul Revere, Ben Franklin, John Hancock, George Washington and the rest of the gang would have been terrorists.

LeAnn, perfect answer. A terrorist intentionally target innocent people as a means of extortion to promote a political or religious agenda. This is the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorists. A terrorist is the antithesis of a freedom fighter, because they aren't concerned with freedom, but submission or more death, and usually when a group appeases them, the terrorists continue to purposefully cause innocent people to die anyway. A freedom fighter wants liberation. Multiculturalism rears its ugly head again in some answers.

To me a terrorist is one who thinks that his way is the only way to go A terrorist uses intimidation and threats to control others In controlling others, they are physically, mentally, and verbally abusive to the intended victim Not only are there foreign terrorists, but we have home grown within our country's borders: like gang members who use violence against others, neighborhood bullies who have declared the neighborhood their turf, in our schools there are bullies who run over other children, stealing their lunch money and clothing There are even religious terrorists who think their religion is the only one and persons of other religions are less than they are.
