No, however, you need to becareful not to give away your personal information during the process. Don't even tell your friends about it unless you trust them fully. I heard some ppl went to jail for 6 month using limewire but this is like 1/1000000000000 chance of getting it.

If you are downloading copyrighted material such as movies, music and pirated software, then you can be sued by a software, movie or music company.
As for RIAA cases, all people except for one case has been settled outside of court for several thousand dollars. There is a recent case that made it to the courts for the first time, which should make it interesting for future cases.
As for software companies, most people just got fined. The people that went to jail were people that got caught pirating software and distributing/selling it.
If you want to be completely safe, then don't do it at all. I think the odds of being caught would be like 1 in 25,000. Better than winning the lottery or getting struck by lightning.
