In chess, when the pawn gets to the last row it can be replaced by a queen, rook, bishop, or knight. Is there any reason that it would be to your advantage to NOT choose the queen?
(In very special circumstances, picking a knight might lead to checkmate on the next move.) But when should a player pick the rook or bishop?

You would almost always promote to a queen or occasionally a knight, but there are rare situations when you might prefer a rook or bishop. These will be when promoting to a queen would cause a stalemate, but promoting to a rook or bishop would allow you to checkmate.

Simple example with black king, white pawns, no other black pieces on the board:
XXX
PXK
XXX
XXP

If I advance the pawn and promote it to a queen, black is stalemated. If I promote to a rook, I have a reasonably easy checkmate.

It is rare to pick a bishop. In some cases promoting as a queen will result in a stalemate (the oponent king has no legitamate move). So you would want to consider promoting the pawn as a rook.

When the pawn is promoted, the queen is the best piece to replace it with. When you underpromote, the next best piece is the knight. This will typically be done to avoid the queen's causing a stalemate, in order to cause a forced mate, or to cause a fork, which would give you a net increase in material. For example, forking the opponent's king and queen, giving you 12 pts. (with the player gaining a knight and his opponent losing a queen) instead of nine points (with the player gaining a queen).

same situation as above, i would never pick anything but a queen unless the knight gave me a checkmate finishing move, as the queen alreadys has the same move as the rook and bishop

In a position where promoting to a Queen will lead to your opponent's King being stalemated it is better to promote to a Rook or Bishop to avoid stalemate.

You would never pick rook or bishop over a queen.

you shouldnt pick the queen when there is a rook or another queen in the same row or column because then it could eat you on its next move

You should always go with a queen. At least use it to get rid of all the other pieces bafore moving in on the king in order to avoid a stalemate.
