As a matter of political expediency the British managed to promise the Arabs Jerusalem at the same time as they promised to give the Jews a homeland. The two promises were incompatible.

In the bigger scheme of things, Palestine, and particularly Jerusalem, has enormous spiritual significance to devotees of 3 religions, who seem unable to find a way to cooperate. This has caused friction for over 1,000 years.

The middle east problems started a long time ago....prior to the league of nations and the Ottoman Empire......There have been blood feuds or jihads since before Mohamed.
