Many felt anger and disbelief as there were no signs they were loosing the war. The war was mostly in France and Belgium and most of it was a stalemate. So the lost was a shock. The Treaty of Versailles held Germany responsible and took away German land, restricted their army and navy, and made them pay massive reparations. The new democratic governments were in turmoil with lots of fringe groups as they couldn't fix the economy with such a debt. They ended up printing more money that lead to hyperinflation

No one suffered more than Germany by the Great Depression of the 1930's. Unemployment was at 1/3.

The conditions in Germany were not nearly as poor after WWI as the were after WWII. The problem that occurred in Germany between the world wars was the opposite of what happened in the US. Germany was ordered to pay the "winning" countries to help rebuild them. Germany was under tremendous financial strain. Inflation ran rampant. Due to the inflation problem, the standard of living was not able to increase. Germany faced a civil war because the government was not in control by one majority. All of these factors led up to Hitler's ability to rise to power
