Or the complete opposite? It seems counterintuitive, and yet, sometimes denial works. Ignore it and it'll go away, right? Right?!! ;-)

Sociopaths do not have to lie to themselves. Happiness is not something they achieve or care to.

Maybe I don't mean lying so much as neglecting to acknowledge certain things. I don't know. Thanks for all the great answers guys!

Hmmm Yum...tough one.
I think it is essential to a false sense of happiness...
But, it actually has the complete opposite effect.
Often it is so much easier to convince ourselves of certain things, even when we know it's not true, because it momentarily brings some sort of relief, comfort or "happiness". The problem is, because its a false sense of happiness sooner or later you have to look at your own reflection in the mirror and admit the truth...that by pretending, neglecting, or lying to yourself ...you have damaged your inner being...in turn, you may end up in more pain, than if you'd faced certain truths to begin with.
Still, having said that...I will continue to be one of the many that in so many instances, rather than face the truth, prefers to paint a pretty picture, and pretends to be satisfied with it, until that day comes when the blantant truth is screaming at me in the mirror.

No it's the opposite. If you lie to yourself you can never experience genuine happiness. If you lie to yourself then you're building a house of cards that is going to come tumbling down one of these days. Living in denial, ignoring your problems doesn't make them go away, they are still there underneath it all. The best way to achieve happiness is to face your problems head on, be honest with yourself & deal with them as best you can. Then you feel in control of yourself & your life. It may be tough in the beginning but at least you are dealing with your problems & working through them rather than hiding from the truth.

It is essential for a sociopath to lie to them self to be happy. In fact that is the only way that they know how to survive.
Some people who are realists might be called fatalists, but they really arn't.
A dose of denial here and there often is a padding for the painful parts of life.
Personally, I believe in balance in all things. A bit of reality, a bit of denial, a little white lie, and so on....

I dont know how you want this question answered. Yes we base all of our happiness on lies, because even if we think of ourself as lets say "good looking" or "quiet", the vast majority of the world may think differently. We lie because of our opinions. We tell ourselfs that we can do better so that we try harder, we take sugar pills and believe that they are medicine. The whole world is based on the lie that we are the most advanced species- that in itself is a lie because we are the most advanced species to ourselves, meaning if we were ants we would probably think we were the most advanced species so without lies we would be nothing.

Love is while the different guy or woman's happiness comes till now your man or woman happiness. this is once you will possibly die for somebody, once you will possibly supply your life for somebody else. Romance or infatuation is while your happiness relies upon on others. we are in a position to make idols of folk! God bless you

Honesty is essential to one's happiness. If you have a good self concept, there's no need to lie to yourself. Lying to yourself tells me you you have a low self esteem since you don't want to face the truth.

No, I don't think lying to myself gets me anywhere. It is the same as lying to others and I would rather be called anything but a liar or a thief.

But for how long will it work?? one day everything that you are denying will hit you hard in the face and then downhill all the way. I think being realistic is better, and having hope that things will be okay , are okay and will always be okay.

it's not the matter of right or wrong.
if u think with lying to yourself can make you happy, then just do it. if it is not, then just leave it. coz if u're building ur life with lies, then someday u'll wake up and u'll regret all the time u spent in lies.
