i have a buffalo/ indian head nickel, with the date rubbed off, it was living under a safe for about 25 years from what i know. so the date is flattened out and so is the state of issue, all i know is that the buffalo has all 4 legs, and there are dot bullets in between each word on the back where it says united states of america. the indian still looks good and so does the buffalo, anyone know how i can determine the date or state? please feel free to email me if you have any info

i looked at some pictures on the site that i got from the first answerer, and i see that the mint state is lower on the rim of the coin than shown in the illustrations, it is completely worn off.

Well a few of the dates on the buffalo nickel
have been restored with acid, but I don't
know how it's done. Sorry.
All I can say is that if the buffalo is standing
on a line the date can be anything from 1913-1938.
If the buffalo is standing on a mound the coin
was issued in 1913. That was the only
year the mound design was used.

It was minted from 1913 - 1938.

I usually don't like relying on info from wikipedia, but I think this info is pretty reliable.
