Trotsky was exiled to Siberia due to conflicts in the Communist system. The people did not do anything against Trotsky even when he has disagreements with Stalin.

Mostly political enemies. They were sent to prison camps, or "gulags" as they were called. The performed hard labor and mostly perished and froze to death. There are many classic novels about the gulags in Siberia. One tells of a person's escape from those prisons, who walked two thousand miles across Siberia and survived to tell the tale. The book is in German, entitled "So Weit Die Füsse Tragen" which translates as "As Far as Your Feet Will Carry You." Another novel is "Taiga", about such a prison camp and a female prisoner. An intense love story with the bad guy Commissar Commandant the perfect villain.

Not sure what you mean what did Siberia do... he remained there and married for 3 years if I remember correctly. He wrote several of his greatest books of which I have read them all while in exile there...

He exiled political dissenters and opponents. After they got there they generally died.
