Are the universes parallel up until the time each decision is made and then disappear leaving the one you're in? Are the only real parallel universes the future ones? Or are there parallel pasts too?

Recent developments in string theory and gravity theory have lead to the development of M theory. The purpose of these theories is to make a single unified theory for the known forces of the universe (gravity, electomagnetism, weak forces, strong forces) As it stands we have Newton's Laws of Motion for the really big and Quantum Mechanics for the really small.

String Theory identifies 10 different planes (they call them membranes or branes) of existence (granted most are explained mathematically) M Theory identifies 11 branes. The 11th brane provides for parallel universes.

Parallel universes exist along side our own universe. They have a past and a future unique to them. The main feature about parallel universes is not just that they represent the infinite number of choices that can be made, but the infinite way that known laws of nature can interact and adjust.

That means that if gravity were an infinitely strong force, in that universe all the matter in the universe would be pulled into a single point and there would be no stars, planets, galaxies, or even life.

If gravity were much weaker than it is, in that universe all the matter would remain widely dispersed though out and again no stars, planets, or galazies or even life would form.

There are almost certainly no parallel universes - there is certainly no evidence for them, and no experimental support for any other aspects of the theories that postulate them at present.

However, should they exist the current theories leave no points of contact of the laws of physics between parallel universes, so what happens in one is entirely independent of what happens in another in every single respect, right down to the sub nuclear level.

I've heard that before - was it on Star Trek?

There are theories about parallel universes, yes, but they can't be tested. So very likely the answer is no.

learn the great Attractor. 250 Million mild years from our image voltaic device is a community of area time-commemorated because of the fact the great Attractor, this is pulling the Milky way and hundreds of alternative galaxies in the direction of itself at 14 million miles an hour. in keeping with risk as quickly as we comprehend this region of area greater effective, we can be attentive to the place the Universe ends. and then learn dark matter, envisioned to be 70% of the time-commemorated Universe.
