Me and my family are Catholic, and we believe that Halloween is a night the devil and demons 'come out' and lurk in the darkness. It's hard to explain. Anyway, my family also celebrates All Saints Day, where you dress up as a special saint and do an oral report on it. I also want to do Halloween , but...my mom says its up to me. I don't know if its wrong or right to do that. Also, whats the ideal age to stop trick-or-treating?

Ok...... Should a Catholic do All Saints Day or Halloween, or both?
...and...

What is the ideal age to stop trick-or-treating?

Well, ever since I was two, I have been celebrating Halloween. My mom had a 'mid-life crisis' and became a devout Catholic, therefore, she wanted us to celebrate All Saints Day. But, she still said we could celebrate Halloween (this is when I was around 9). Lately, she has been wanting us to stop celebrating Halloween, and switch to All Saints day. I mean, I don't trick-or-treat because of the devil, I do it for candy, and its fun dressing up. And halloween, christmas, and my b-day are the holidays that I REALLY REALLY look forward to every year. Taking that away (i know this might sound weird) is like taking part of me away, you know. HELP MMEEE!!!

Halloween has nothing to do with the devil. Besides, if it did, don't you think it would be something a little more sinister than trick-or-treating? lol

There are many speculations as to how Halloween began, but I believe the most accepted theory is the Celtic holiday Samhain, which means "end of summer". In Celtic Ireland, Oct 31st was the last day of summer.

Here is a good explanation of Halloween from a Christian's view: http://www.new-life.net/halowen1.htm

Worrying about this a little in advance arent you?

Well its like this. If you feel bad and have catholic guilt about halloween... then dont go. If you are doing all saints, then do it and feel good about it.

If there is no issue with you going out for halloween, go out for the fun part, not the pagan part, which is zero to nil anyway. NO one sacrifices or devil worships on halloween anymore. Its all so silly.

Enjoy it either way.

I come from a Catholic background. I had a friend who was totally against Halloween.

But Halloween is not Satanic, it is just about the ancient Druids/pagans/celts/ who celebrated their ancestors. They would dress up like evil spirits to hide from and scare the bad spirits away from their homes.
Just don't stay out too late and get into mischief. You can celebrate both days, because the Catholic Church introduced All Saints Day as a response to the pagan Halloween.

Pagans aren't atheists- they just believe in gods other than the Judeo-Christian version of God. It's all the same. You're not going to Hell for celebrating Halloween. Do you think all the peaceful ancient peoples of the earth will go to hell because they believed in many gods and never knew Christianity?

As long as you love the Higher Power, love your neighbors, and love yourself you will be fine.

We have skipped halloween the past couple of years and my kids haven't complained. We buy them a little candy and rent some movies and just stay in. A lot of churches provide alternatives to halloween for the kids if they would rather do that.

I think they will.

There is no age to stop trick or treating, especially if you decide to get married and have kids since you will need to take your kids out for halloween until they are old enough to go on thier own. Plus if you get your own place then you need to give out candies unless you decide not to celebrate Halloween at all.

There is nothing wrong with dressing up for Halloween and going trick or treating. You are not worshipping any devils or demons, you are simply going from house to house and being given candy. You can be a good Christian and have fun and that is what Halloween is, FUN! Approach it with that in mind and you are not doing anything wrong. Go and enjoy.

Halloween is just a fun holiday. If you want to do halloween, then go for it.

Personally, I think halloween is for kids. By the time you reach 14 or 15 you should be done trick-or-treating until you have kids of your own.

Do both - explain to your mum your reasons for wanting to continue your tradition. And continue trick or treating until you feel that you'd rather attend a party or stay at home and give out candy. Do what feels right for you is the bottom line and don't let your mom guilt you into making the decision she made for herself. If you decide something for yourself - fine and dandy but don't let her guilt you into decisions that don't feel good to you.

I realize it sounds dull, however i desire to be each Ciel and Fiona, so im simply blending it up. Plus, I did order a Ciel gown, it is not gonna send till subsequent week. (and it is coming from Hong Kong)

Halloween is just a kids holiday, so they can get some candy... most people don't worship the devil on that day, they just dress up and have fun...

Read up on it and see how silly it is to have such strong beliefs about Halloween.. http://www.history.com/minisites/halloween/viewPage?pageId=713
