Doula was once the word for the most important Greek slave, the one who helped the woman of the house through childbirth.
Now, doulas are trained to support mothers through birth. They make suggestions to Dad how he can help. They do massage for mom. They provide information, translate what the medical staff is telling you, help you to understand risks and benefits of stuff, act as an advocate for you with the hospital staff, help mom physically and emotionally through labor and help her establish breastfeeding.

A doula is a delivery couch. They are there to help you make informed decision and to make sure that your wishes are up held. You can use a doula even if you want an epidural. They are there to help with anything you may need. I wish that I would have had one with my first child because my husband feel asleep in the chair and had to be woke up when they finally decided to do a c-section! I am definitely having a doula with my next child because they are more experienced in the process and will give you more options than the nursing staff. The nursing staff just wants you to do whatever they want to make it easier on them, they have several patients and are very busy and do not want to be incovienced by a mother that would rather walk the halls than be stuck in bed with back labor. Get the doula - they are fabulous!!!!

What I know about a doula is when I met a lady who was a practicing doula. I only got to speak with her for an hour, but this is what I know about it. She coaches the parents how to have a natural birth of their baby. Teaching meditation, becoming " the animal", letting your body do what it is naturally geared to do in the birth process. I have had all three of my children naturally (without drugs) and practiced what she teaches. I did it on my own as I did not know of a dould back then. I highly recommend one!!!

My doc told me a Doula is used by women who are wholly committed to natural child birth. They will definately keep you honest in that regard. He said if you are at all open to using pain control then his opinion is that they are not worth spending money for. The delivery nurses are awesome.
