1.) Discipline in America's urban schools is a huge educational crisis that the public does not even begin to recognize. Student behavior is so disrespectful and inappropriate. The climate is chaotic - sometimes it feels downright hellish - and I don't know how anyone comes out of the system with basic skills. I don't blame anyone - I have seen excellent teachers hit bottom, I have seen dedicated fathers break down in tears, and the students themselves are totally caught up in the dysfunctional quagmire. But urban education is in terrible shape primarily because of behavior problems, and it needs to be addressed in terms of behavioral standards and completely overhauled. This might mean an extremely regimented program with zero tolerance - I'm talking boot-camp style military schools. Students who prove their capacity to behave properly could earn their way into more lax programs. It is something that would be a tremendous shock to the whole urban youth culture - and probably even result in mass demonstrations, boycotts, etc. But I think it really has come to that point, and the introduction of order would gradually be felt as a great relief. Incidentally, I think school districts should be given the legal mandate to permanently expel students who consistently sabotage the educational process -- something they currently don't have.

2.) Funding for education should be drastically shifted to enable very small class sizes. Today's world is too complex to think that we can continue educating children in bunches of 20 to 30. Money being spent on fancy new buildings, state of the art technology, massive standardized testing, you name it -- it should all be limited to what is left after classes are reduced to 12 or less. Yes, this would mean a huge increase in the teacher workforce, and it would cost billions. Ask yourself if it's as important as the billions we're spending on the Iraq war.

Computerization of the educational system must be made because the world is advancing speedily with technology and the educational processes must cope up with it.

Terrorism must be explained to the students. The threat of violence and how to react to it must be indoctrinated for public safety.
