Kobe Bryant. Not only does he lead the NBA in scoring, he averages 1.5 steals per game and is in the top 20 in assists. Perhaps even more remarkable, Kobe is actually in number 2 in assists for his position of shooting guard (only Wade [7.9- but also plays point guard as well] has more assists per game). Additionally, Kobe is the only player in the NBA averaging at least 30 points per game while averaging at least 5 rebounds and 5 assists. While some individuals may state that Wade is a better player- Wade does not have an outside range in his offensive ability (he has never averaged even 1 3 pointer per game in his career). Conversely, Kobe's offensive reportoire is the complete package. His offense (as proven by his 81 point performance and his recent back to back 65/50 point outings) is potent from anywhere on the floor. Moreover, Kobe's defensive game (while not as honed as it was, say 3 years ago) is still at an elite level. For his position, only a few players surpass Kobe (most notably Josh Smith- who, at his spot role as a shooting guard [he also plays small forward at times] averages at least 1 steal per game and 2 1/2 blocks per game)! Still, defensive ability and quality is not as easily measured by stats as offesive abilities are. Consider that Kobe virtually always defends the primary scorer of the oppossing team night in and night out. Such an arduous task, makes his numbers all the more impressive.
As for comparisons to LeBron, LeBron has yet to establish the mentality of a champion that Kobe (and even Wade) have proven.
Other players, such as Nash, Garnett, and Nowtizki are all incredible players as well. However, pound for pound, Kobe Bryant is the best player in basketball right now, and by the end of his career (given the way he is playing) he will be in the top 10 of all time (maybe even number 1, if there weren't so many haters).

Kobe seems like the obvious choice, but incorrect nonetheless. There in no doubt in ANYONE's mind that kobe is the best offensive player today, but that only makes for 50% of his game. 3 years ago, with defense was awesome. he was on the all nba 1st defensive team. now, his defense has deteriorated, especially off the ball defense, constantly allowing people to cut to the basket for layups.
even though he hasn't won anything, and his team is only so-so, i still honestly believe Kevin Garnett is the best player... and this is coming from a Tim Duncan fan. Garnett puts up 23, 12.6, 4.2 assists (great for a 7 footer), 1.7 blocks, and even 1.3 steals. his stats are great across the board, not to mention 48% field goals, 83% free throws, and an ungaurdable turnaround, fadeaway jumpshot on the baseline. he has lead the league in rebounding more than once, and has a regular season MVP award (unlike the rapist). stats dont lie. KG is still teh best player, though his team sucks something else

sorry..but all of u MORONS who say Kobe Bryant don't know the game...he is a ball hog who shoots low percentages...isn't a great passer and doesn't make his teammates better. a phenomenal talent yes, but not the best player in the game...that would have to be Kevin Garnett or Steve Nash at this point with Dirk Nowitski close behind. I would say Garnett based on all the skills he has in every phase but he hasn't made his team better so right now the edge has to go to Nash. Also top 10 and def underrated is Shawn Marion..he does a little of everything on the court.

Hands down it would have to be Kobe Bryant....Before the Kobe's the A.I's and D-wade's...the obvious answer back then would have been micheal jordan....all you have to do is look at which players is (shall we say) the most jordan like in ability and accomplishments...and hands down that would be kobe. His game is almost identical to jordans if not better.. what other player in the league right now has scored 81pts, 62 vs the best team in the league right, 65 one night, and then 50 the very next night.?If thats not the best player in the league i dont know what is. I suggest ppl go to youtube and just type in "Kobe vs Jordan" or Kobe anything and see what you find

There is a reason that they hand out an MVP award...it is so we don't have to debate the question. Nash won it last year and he will be in the top 2 for voting this year.
Nash is a great scorer and the most unselfish player that I have ever seen. He has the ability to take over a game completely whether it is making draining a three or by making a rediculous pass to an open teammate. There is no one smarter or better than Nash.

Gotta be either Kobe or Dirk. These guys have the most complete offensive games in the league right now, and a case could be made for either being one of the best OFFENSIVE players of all time.

It is so simple Kobe is the one, not only he can score, but also became a team player much to the surprise of many, and on my opinion the best ever would be Magic Johnson just for the fact that he made everyone around him better.

no one can doubt that steve nash is the best player in the nba right now. dirk chokes in teh clutch and kobe doesn't make his team nearly as good as nash makes his team. leading assist man, back to back mvps, having career highs this year in practically every category possible. plus he just pulled of an win against the mavericks that everyone couldn't believe. and it was nash that led to the win. his three, his assists to stat/everyone else, and his defence. yes because steve nash has defence too. theres more denying that. definitely the best player in the nba. is steve nash. definitley deserving this 3rd mvp award this year, more than anyone else deserves it.

I am gonna answer this one in a different way. I am gonna do the best player at a position, then the best ovverall player.
at point guard: Steve Nash
at shooting guard: Dwayne Wade
at small forward: Paul Pierce
at power forward: Dirk Nowitzki
at center: Shaq
the best ovverall player is Dirk
he can pass, shoot inside and out, rebound, block, and dribble, and defend.

Nash is the best player in the NBA. he makes everyone on his team better. Nobody knew who leandro barbosa and boris diaw were under Nash came and made them great players by getting them involved in the offense. Without nash this year, the suns have a losing record. He is the mvp this year as well and MVP means best player.
