If it's new from Apple it will come out of the box ready to go. That's generally the way things are these days whether it's a music player, phone, whatever. Still, it doesn't hurt to charge it up a bit first. I doubt it will have a full charge. Just plug it into your Apple or Windows machine (iTunes installed of course), it will sync up and immediately start charging. You can check on the charge level in the device on the main screen.

Charge it fully for about 4 hours or the battery won't work properly. Other than that everything is ready.

Charge it fully first or you will have problems with the battery later...there should be instructions with it...read them!
