With 400,000,000,000 stars in just our galaxy and billions of galaxies that we can see, it seems very likely that there is life out there somewhere. If we find even the smallest bacteria on Mars or another nearby planet, the odds will just up to almost certainty that there is life outside our solar system.
I like to compair humans to ants living on an anthill in Central Park, New York City. Those ants are totally unaware of humans even though humans and our technology are all around them. So intelligent alien life could be all around our galaxy but we just don't notice or recognize it. An ant can't detect a radio signal. So why expect that we could detect an alien signal sent by some advanced technology using gravity waves or neutrinos.
I don't worry about aliens attacking earth. We are not worth their efforts. We could kill all the ants in an anthill but unless they are bothering us, why waste our time. Ants have nothing that we want. And we have nothing that advanced aliens would want.
Write to me if anyone wants to discuss this more.

I dont think we are alone. There must be some other life out there somewhere. Whether there is intelligent life is a more interesting question? Or even what IS intelligence?
I think finding microbial life somewhere other than earth would be the greatest discovery ever, but would then get boring pretty quick - But what would happen if we made contact with life that we can communicate with in a meaningful way? That would be pretty cool!! And what would we say to them? what would they say to us?
As in most questions of science, the answer just spawns more questions!! :)

Thus far, our planet is the only one known to sustain life. I'm hopeful that we'll discover signs of life in other star systems within the next few decades, but we aren't there yet.
I believe that an earthlike planet in a sunlike solar system will inevitably evolve life. We've proven that "primordial soup" will give rise to amino acids, which quickly give rise to self-replicating molecules with the capacity to mutate. While the full path from abiogenesis to advanced lifeforms is far from proven, we've proven enough steps to convince me that life is virtually guaranteed to develop on planets that are capable of sustaining it.
However, there doesn't seem to be any other technologically advanced civilization in our stellar neighborhood. If there were, we should have picked up radio signals by now. I'm forced to conclude that technological civilization is probably a very rare thing in the universe, and ours is probably the only technological civilization within thousands of lightyears.
I'd like to believe that intelligent, technologically advanced life is much more common than that, but thus far the evidence doesn't seem to show it.

just by the immense size of the universe, by odds there should be lots of life in the universe and sentience must have been reached by some other than us, the problem might be the timing and distance.
i wonder in this universe, is there more than one(us) sentient species close enough to make contact that either has not gone extinct or will be sentient before we are extinct
not too interested in non thinking life, whoopee if we find bacteria mars, europa, or wherever. i want to hang out with et, or spock, or chewbacca.

Whether there is life on other planets (and there probably is) is most likely completely irrelevant. There is no particular reason to believe that any other civilization has conquered the laws of physics to allow them to get from one star to another within a lifetime. There may be life out there, but the chance of us ever encountering it up close and personal is pretty close to zero.

what is up with all this 'alone' talk..? There are 7 billion people on this planet!! how many do u need?! But personally i don't think there is... it would be a bit scary if there was, especially if they were hostile ... hmmm... i think i've been watching too many movies... better lay off the sci fi stuff for a while :)

In my opinion no we are not alone. There is such a MASSSIVE amt of space that thinking we are the only "living" creatures in this whole creation is very closeminded. My opinion. SO dont someone get mad about it if you dont agree. Thank you
