Your question is actually simple, but it can be quite deceptive. If you have a distance vs time graph, the slope would represent the speed. If the graph is linear (in the form of y = mx + c), then the value of that speed is constant, i.e. constant speed. And that speed could only be positive, there's no such thing as negative speed. (The smallest value for a speed is 0, which means you're not moving) Thus, you would expect a distance vs time graph to have only positive slope, and no negative ones. If, however, you have a displacement vs time graph, then it is actually possible to have both positive and negative value. Since velocity is a vector quantity, the negative sign would simply indicate the direction of the velocity. Similar to the distance vs time graph, if the graph is linear, the value, or magnitude of the velocity is constant. Let's say you have a displacement vs time graph, which is represented by the equation : y = -2x For this particular graph, the negative slope would indicate a negative constant velocity. It does not mean that the velocity is reducing (it's in fact moving at a constant velocity), but the direction is now opposite than what we had declared as positive earlier. Similarly, a graph of y = 2x, would have the same magnitude for the velocity, but the direction is now changed..the particle is now moving in the opposite direction. Hope this helps, it can be a bit confusing sometimes..

A negative slope means that as the value of X increases, the value of Y decreases.
IE: Y=(-m)x+b
Or, more graphically, a line that looks like this.

when you are looking at a graph with a line sloping downward as you go from left to right. As you read the line from left to right, it is going down. A positive slope would read upward.

positive slope goes upward right from the "x" axis; negative slope goes downward below the horizontal axis.
