Because of ratings systems. Historically, the Spartans fought wearing only a cloak and harness for weapons, if even that. In other words, they fought pretty much naked except for their shield and helmets. The Spartans were known for their lightning speed and ferocity, not heavy armor like their Athenian Greek rivals. It is likewise conspicuous that the Athenian navy is missing from this version of the story of the battle of Thermopylae, let alone that more than one other Greek city state was represented in the battle overall.

There not really speedos, but seriously. Soldies back in the day didn't wear pants and sweaters. There wore clothing similar to what is shown in 300. Look at the trojans, they practically wore skirts, so whatever.

It would be unfortable wearing armor on your croch. Another reason is because armor is heavy. Part of being a Spartan requires speed and durability, just like what King Leonidas did at the end. He sacraficed his armor to get a clear show of the Persian God. He was able to make the God bleed.

because they wanted to show how ripped they all were....they were supposed to be the perfect race!!!!they originally wore chest plates, but the director thought it would be better without, which i totally agree w/. and he also changed the helmets design!! in my opinion i love how they filmed this, and it helps a lot that the men all have amazing bodies......:)
