Having a forest near by always helped-The wood to build and repair ships, food source (hunting), fresh water (lake, waterfalls etc.), easy access to inland areas (commerce), on the leeward side of an island (storm protection), a few high vantage points (for lookouts), a naturally deep harbor that is storm protected and with ariver that is also deep that goes inland.
These are a few I could think of off hand.

A safe harbor, a place that they could go to in order to get away from the main part of a bad storm...

Deep water fairly close to land.. where they can anchor closer to land (or right next to it) and move cargo more easily.
