Its legal to share YOUR MP3s. They are yours if YOU recorded them and/or you are the artist. They are NOT YOURS if you bought them from a store, or downloaded them or ripped them from a CD. When you buy music in this country you are buying a license to use it, just like your software licenses on your computer. You don't own them in the eyes of the law. Those you cannot share because the people you share with have not bought them. You can let them borrow your CD, but not copies of the music.
I think its stupid, but its the law.

It's legal if by your own you mean you wrote and produced the songs. Anything else is copyright infringement.
