I ride Harley baggers and here is my 2 cents.
Avon are great bar hoppers, cheap, but don't cut it when you put on a lot of miles. Go to a Iron Butt Rally and you won't see a pair of Avon tires.
The old Dunlops lasted a long long time, but sucked when the road was wet. What real rider doesn't ride when the weather isn't perfect?
Metzler and Pirelli great grip, but wear out too fast for me. I want to be able to atleast do a trip without changing tires while out there.
So I tried Continental. http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/de/en/continental/motorcycle/general/home/index_en.html Love them on my cars. Well for my bagger I got hooked on the TK series. I get almost 10,000 miles on A rear tire (2 rear to 1 front) so they wear like Dunlops. But they stick like Metzler and Pirelli.
My only problem is the front tires cup or saw tooth and they hum around corners. Have tried everything from pressures, fork oils, wheel bearings blah blah blah.. they just cup and hum. still stick like gum.

Now they have a new series out to replace the TK that I will have to try as the Front and 2nd Rear are up for replacement in around 6k miles.

Oh and the cost a bit less then Dunlops.

Motorcycle tires from brand name companies are definitely heads and tails above those for cars. And the safety and quality differences between manufacturers is minute. It is all about the handling. Here is a short comparison:

Keep the rubber side down.

Best all around tire is the Metzler ME880. Great traction and a hard enough compound to get some good milage out of.
For "Stick" the Avon Super Venom.

I have to agree that bar none Metzler is the superior tire on the market. They use a water based mold release so no wear in is necessary. Also they use a wrapped belt design that will keep you a lot more stable if you hit something and puncture one at speed. They will wear a bit faster than a Doneplop or others, but sticky is sticky and that's a good thing, a tire is cheaper than my but. Ride safe.

Metzler, just buy them and you will know. I've had several bikes and the Metzler's just grip. They make you extremely confident.

Avon. They grab and handle well and still get lots of miles.
