As a Simpson's fan, I highly doubt that Matt Groening would actually stop the Simpsons unless the ratings really go down, he may do some new episodes once in a while, but he'll show us our favorite episodes that most of America loved and grew up with. However, Simpsons is a cult classic television show. Its high-spirited fans will never get tired of Homer's mishaps, Marge's nagging and budging, Lisa's political perseverance, and Bart's demonic tactics. If the Simpsons ended, there would be a whole bunch of cartoon families that will try to overachieve the 17 years of success the Simpsons endured. To answer your question, not until the ratings are low. So far, the rating are pretty high right now, and who knows, they may stay longer if they can. I think that 17 years is rather a legacy than success. Family Guy would be the next best thing after the Simpsons, but Family Guy has some catching up to do to measure up to the Simpson's publicity and cult classic spirit, even though the show is quite humorous. Are you going to see the Simpsons Movie, if you are, I hope you enjoy it. I'm also going to see it opening night. I hope it's really funny, and comedic.

No. Matt Groening has stated that the movie is basically a medium for the artists to further express themselves through more complicated animation that is not budgeted for in the TV series.
