Hemoglobin is located inside a red blood cell. It is the group of molecules that grabs an oxygen molecule and holds tight while that red blood cell goes through your bloodstream and down thru the capillary to just next to some body cells in the tissues. The hemoglobin releases that oxygen molecule to your grateful body cells, who then use the oxygen to release the energy from the food you eat. (can you believe that!)

Hemoglobin is tested along with your hematocrit by a blood test.

If you don't have enough red blood cells for some reason, for instance, you are bleeding, that could cause a lower hemoglobin and hematocrit level, because each red blood cell carries a set large number of hemoglobin molecules.

If you have a certain kind of problem, you could also be making some poor-quality hemoglobin or insufficient hemoglobin that doesn't do a good job of holding onto the oxygen molecules until the red blood cell gets to the tissues. You see this in sickle cell anemia or thalessemia.

If you don't have enough iron intake, and most women don't, you could have a problem making hemoglobin because part of the hemoglobin molecule is iron. If you lack the iron, you won't make such great hemoglobin that does its job well. So eat steak once a week to solve this problem.

Hemoglobin is the iron that is carried in the blood. If you have a low hemoglobin you really need to consult your physician and look at rectifying this. Low Iron levels = Low health and energy levels. Also eat plenty on green vegetables, lean meat, fish and fresh fruit, this also helps. You may however, require iron or folic acid intervention (tablets)
