Your choices really depend on the topic. For instance, if you're writing an essay in the scientific field, it is best to choose letter C to do some research to base your essay on information from facts. If your topic concerns humanity (philosophy or social science) then you can choose letter C (to look up statistics, perspective from historical philosophers or to research experimental observation regarding cultural revolution, dynamics, etc) or D (to conduct your own experiment with your immediate surroundings based on research).

I tend to think that letter B is always helpful if you have problems conducting the research yourself. Of course, all objective essays require some degree of research. Letter A really pertains to creative writing such as poetry or maybe even an autobiography that may not require B, C, or D.

any of those options could work, it depends on what you're writing. If you're writing a heavy duty research paper, you should probably use B or D. If you're writing a paper that needs outside sources but only one or two, C would work. For a more informal paper, A would work just fine. Whatever fits your style and the type of paper you're writing, go with!
