Sorry, steadyvoter, but the Communists did not overthrow the Czar. He abdicated voluntarily in February 1917, and was replaced by a provisional council called the Duma, under the control of Alexander Kerensky. The Duma continued the war with Germany, with disastrous results. The Communists launched an uprising in November (October on the Russian calendar), and took power. Lenin then ruled until 1924, when Stalin took over.

Until 1917, it was Russia, and the leader was Czar (Emporer) Nicholas II. After the Bolshevik's overthrew the Czar in 1917, it became the Soviet Union under Vladimir Lenin. After Lenin, was Josef Stalin.

Edit: Flyboy - . The Bolsheviks were the predecessor of the Communist party, and I did not say that "communists overthrew the Czar" They were still called "Bolshevik" at the time of the October Revolution. After the revolution, the Treaty of Creation of USSR was signed creating the Soviet Union, while Lenin was still in power. The Soviet Union was created in 1922 and Stalin did not come to power until 1924.

Yes, Lenin abdicated, but it was due to the pressures by the Bolsheviks, who later in 1917 executed him & his family. He was forced to abdicate his title. So, in a short synopsis, it is correct to say that Lenin was overthrown.
