what should i major in and does it pay a lot?

If you're getting into it only for the money, then find another career because it will probably barely pay the rent.
If you're dedicated and interested in helping people with problems who can't help themselves, then it might be for you.

Psychology and\or Sociology and you need a BA\BS.
What ever state you are in look at the qualifications in in the paper for Social workers and see what they are looking for.
Are you can look at hospital web sites to see what jobs they are hiring for in the mental wards and they tell you what qualifications you should have.
