None. It is not a good thing to do. First it is a choking hazard. Second, it should be fed by spoon. Third, it is an old wives tale that it helps a baby sleep.

All you will accomplish is extra calories going into your baby. At 4 months you can introduce the spoon feeding although it's even better to wait until 6 months.

The answer to the question how much rice cereal do I put in a 7 oz bottle is "none". Don't start feeding your baby solids in a bottle - keep the bottle for formula and feed him rice cereal from a spoon and dish. The instructions for making up the cereal with formula should be on the packet.

I would not give the child anything but breastmilk or formula until age 6 months.

That is what I did for my daughter, and I know the AAP recommends the same.

Be very careful as well about what the first food offered is. Remember that children's eating habits are established even from this young age. The AAP recommends that the first food be a vegetable. Try to stay away from really sweet fruits and starches (cereal) in the beginning.

Good luck!

Babies should not have rice cereal in the bottle, it should be spoon fed, and its ok to do so at 4 months. My daughter was eating rice cereal by spoon at 2 1/2 months. Mix some rice cereal and formula in a bowl, make it runny at first and then gradually thicken it. If you put it in the bottle it will not teach him how to eat from a spoon. Putting cereal in a bottle is, as my grandmother refers to it, "the lazy way".

I never understood how a bit of cereal in the bottle is a choking hazard. 1 tablespoon in 7 ounces is going to be still liquid and not mushy. It'll dissolve and anything that doesn't isn't going to fit through the hole to begin with.

On the box of rice cereal from Gerber it says: "Baby's First Feeding: mix 1 tablespoon with 4-5 tablespoons of breastmilk or formula"

If you do give him cereal, use a spoon, for the purpose of learning how to eat that way. I tried the cereal in the bottle, didn't make him sleep any longer. I switch to spoon feeding and fed him a "meal" of cereal by spoon and then breastmilk in a bottle.

i hate to break it to all these people on her that say "oh it's not a good idea" but its not gonna hurt your baby one bit. just put like one or two teaspoons in it. make sure its still really thin. at just a month old i started giving my first child some baby cereal in his bottle at night so he would sleep longer and there is not a d*mn thing wrong with my child. and for all of those "thumbs down" that i'm going to get because people are going to think i'm a bad mother, guess what!!! i'm a doctor i think i know what is best for my child!!!

Four months?

Did the pediatrician tell you to do it?

I went to nutrition school, and according to my teachers it is better to wait until the age of 6 months to introduce solids.

And then, cereal shouldn't be that first solid.

You should start with vegetables. Very clean, and cooked in a little water until tender then mash it to a pulp.

Only give him one vegetable at a time, and have a log in which you will write any reaction he might have (texture of stools, rashes, crying, etc).

By vegetables I mean veggies like kale, spinach, zucchini, etc.

Only offer him a tiny little bite the first day and see how it goes.

If you train his palate to vegetables, he will learn to accept them.

If you start with sweet things like bananas and cereal you will be creating a little picky eater that will only accept sweet foods.

It is very important to only introduce one food at a time.

Cereal is very high in carbohidrates, and will spike his blood sugar like never before. His tiny pancreas might have trouble coming up with enough insulin to deal with it.

Veggies are much better for him!

Dont.

At all. You shouldn't start your child out with starch. And my doctor told me to never put cereal in my son's bottle.

You need to leave them on formula alone until they are 6 months old and then try them on bananas, sweet potatos, or something of that nature.

As for starting them on fruit will make them picky, it's total BS. My son started with bananas and applesauce and he's now 1 and will eat whatever you give him. He loves black eyed peas, green beans, chicken, fish, pinto beans, potatos, and anything else that you will put on his high chair tray. He's never turned his nose up at a single food, and all he had for 2-3 weeks was applesauce and bananas. Then we moved on to sweet potatos, green beans, peas, etc...

None.

You FEED the cereal to your child, not put it in his bottle.

Think of it like this: you are in charge of teaching your son how to eat. If he keeps drinking and gaining weight, you won't associate spoon-feeding with feeling food.

Spoon feed. NEVER put into the bottle.

You shouldn't put rice in a baby's bottle unless it is a very very tiny tiny tiny amount. They could choke.
