If you really want to design clothes you should want to learn to sew. Have you ever watched Project Runway on Bravo? Those people have to be able to draw their design and then sew it. It's really a lot of fun, and you could learn it easily enough. Go exploring at a local fabric store. Even with using other people's patterns, you could have lots of neat clothes that no one else has.

Yes, of course! Basically, designers will draw out ideas in many different views and give it to others to sew for them. So if you can't sew, it won't affect your creativity or chance to become a designer.

Yes you can be a designer without knowing how to sew. If you can draw you can do it. Most designers don't even sew but you have to know how to sketch what you want sewn together for that finished look. I just designed my own birthday gown by sketching what I wanted and gave it to a professional "haute couture" seamstress. So, yes, you can be a designer and not know how to sew. Good luck!

Yes, you still can be a designer but it is essential to know how to sew. If not you will find it hard to communicate your ideas to the tailor or dressmaking. Unless you have a lot of money, other wise you need to sew the dress yourself. It is very easy, all you need is very basic skill and "Passion" !!! Wish you good luck.

first of all, its great to hear from a fellow future fashion designer. i had this problem too, and even asked a question on it. the answer is NO. you dont. you just need to know how to design the outfit. the sewing and stiching usually is another person's job. oh, and here is a tip for designing from one fashion lover to another: when drawing designs, try looking at real life models of things, like jackets and stuff. it makes it easier to design!

designers to be successful have to know all aspects of the business.
from sourcing materials, to which patterns to choose, how the pattern will look for a particular style, how to cut the material,,how to drape.
yes..if you want to be a designer, you have to know how to sew, drape and cut, also photoshop, illustrator and CAD.
design is hard work.
you have to be able to come up with new and fresh ideas.
if you can draw..then you can do fashion illustration....
very competetive....most designers in addition to all of the above..can also flat sketch well..
i work in the fashion industry in manhattan in design.
