turn the garments inside out, wash in the gentle cycle and air dry

If you are washing them by machine the washing cycle is too harsh for the fibers of the sweaters. I would either try a delicate cycle with a softer detergent or hand washing. There is also a little gadget called a fuzzbuster that you can purchase at a fabric store that will help get rid of the fuzzballs(pilling) that already exist. Good luck

Turn your clothing inside out to wash, right side out to dry.

There are little electric 'shavers' which snip off the fuzzballs and do a really good job. It makes your clothing as good as new. I have used one for several years.

Read the manufacturers washing and care instuctions on the tag. Its really quite disturbing... different materials require differen care?? If we washed everything according to what the tag reads. Everything would be washed seperate!!?!?!?

Don't wash them with regular laundry detergent, but with special sweat soap found in the grocery store.

Wash them inside out on the gentle cycle (or better yet - handwash them). Don't wash them with anything fluffy like towels or bathmats.

I don't think you can prevent it. But, they sell those little electric "shavers" that remove them. See the below link.
