I live in San Francisco area, and I am deciding between UC Santa Cruz (about 2 hours from where I live), Cal Poly (which is about 3 hours away from where I live) and Santa Barbara (which is about 6 hours from where I live). I am mostly interested in science, so which one is a better choice for that? Also my family really doesnt want me to go too far away so I can visit them often, they want me to go to Santa Cruz because its only 2 hours away. I am considering santa cruz, but Santa Barbara is slightly higher on my list... is there really enough of a difference between the two?

So basically I have to find out which college is the best for science and if it turns out that Santa Barbara (the farthest one away) is, then I have to choose between which one is closer to home and which one is slightly better! I don't have a car either. What should I do?

it depends on which is more important to you. if you are really not comfortable with going so far away, and being close to home is more important than the better science department. however, since you don't have a car, being closer to home may not even matter.

but getting farther away from home is a good thing too. my roommate is less than an hours drive away from home, but she barely goes home anymore than i do. (and im 6-8hrs away from home) being 6 hours away from home isnt that bad. it is far enough away that you can can't go home all the time (good for independence-unless you plan to live with your parents all of your life ;) ) and it is still close enough that if you had to go home you could. that is exactly my situation now.

but it is all really up to you. which makes you happier? when you visited the campuses, which one felt right? that is really the one you want.

when it all comes down to it, this is YOUR decision. don't make a decision based on what your parents want. all that will lead to is a fight 30 years from now about how they made you go wherever and that's why you are where you are now.

and being 6 hours away doesn't mean you'll never see them again. there are always freshmen family weekends, holidays, and you'll probably be so busy with work and fun that you wont want to go home all the time.
also, with technology these days, you are much more in contact with everyone. they are probably thinking back to their days in college where they only talked to their parents on a weekly or monthly basis by payphone or letter. now we have email, aim and cellphones. you can basically talk whenever you want!

ok, ive said my part. i hope you make the decision that is right for you. good luck!

You should go with wich college is better for the degree u want. I myself was having difficulty deciding between college and a school specifically for what i want my profession to be . I chose the college it has everything i need and more and ranked number one in successfullness for graduates to be hired. Even If the other college thats the best is further away in the long run u will benefit from having the best schooling knowledge wise and career wise

have you thought about UC San Deigo? they have a really good math/science department. sanat barbra is good too. Cal poly is good...i live 30 mins from santa cruz but i think its a bit of a party school. for science i would def say san diego or sanat barbra. cal poly is an egeneering school and santa cruz is more of an artsy school. i myself have thought about SF state

Visit each school and see what kind of vibe you get on the campus. In addition ask the admissions office if you can speak to to a professor in the specific area you are thinking of majoring in, they can give you alot of information. Good Luck!

I'm sure they are all fine colleges for science, and would not be looked down upon either by graduate schools or employers. And Santa Cruz will be cheaper for you. I'd recommend it.
