I am re-doing my master bath. Of course, everything is non-standard materials! I need to know what kind of pipe is used, as I have to rework it all to fit a new shower in the space where the original tub was. The pipe is black, approximately 2" diameter. Looks like PVC, but PVC won't fit. Help!

It is probably ABS, which, except for cast iron, is the material used for drain and vent pipe in California where I live. However, I have seen PVC used for this purpose in other parts of the country. I don't know why different materials are used, because they are non-interchangeable. You should not attempt to cement ABS pipe and PVC pipe together, because different solvents are used. Instead, you should use a rubber sleeve that is clamped with automotive hose clamps onto the two dissimilar pieces.

ABS pipe fittings can be procured online, if you can't find them locally. One sources for ABS fittings is:

You'll need a drain for your shower. The following link is for an ABS drain. Never mind that it says PVC. That is a typographical error. It is black, which makes it ABS:
