The Irish Republic (Eire) has had self rule since about 1927(maybe earlier). The English were tyrannical rulers because they wanted the land. The main reason for their tyranny was the differences in religion, the Irish are mainly Catholic and the English are mainly Protestant, and this brought about a lot of hate on both sides. But the wealthy English managed to get their own way for a long time. Ireland, like England, is now part of the European Union and they get on a lot better.
The bombings that we hear about are in Northern Ireland, still part of the United Kingdom (Britain), where there is still a great deal of sectarian agitation.

Yes, the Republic of Ireland (South) is free from England's rule. But Northern Ireland is still part of the UK. That's bad that English people talk down to her, I happen to think most Irish people are exceptionally friendly and helpful. England just needs to get over the fact that some countries managed to break free. If only Australia would hurry up and become a Republic!!!

English talk down to Irish like Americans talk down (sometimes) to African Americans and Native Americans. Since we (Americans) defeated and enslaved them, we think we're better than them. The British have a similar response to Irish for the same reasons.
Politically it is divided into the Republic of Ireland, a sovereign state occupying five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, occupying the northeastern sixth of the island

Yes, Ireland but not Northern Ireland. Canada is still a part of the Commonwealth and has the Queen as it's head of state by the way.

Yes, a very long time ago, the South half anyway. Haven't you ever taken a history class. Maybe they talk her down because in Ireland Catholics and Protestants don't get along peacfully. Or maybe they were just racists to Iridh people, she can learn to ignore them.

During the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the English were constantly being told that the Irish were not human, that they were talking animals without souls. This was the only way they could justify the terrible oppression of the Irish.
So it's not surprising they talk down to you now!
