The actual name for the project was the Manhattan Engineering District, but now it's just called the Manhattan Project.

In overall charge of the project was General Leslie Groves of the US Army. The project involved scientists, technicians, and workers all over the country to develop the atomic bomb. Most of the scientific & engineering work was done at Los Alamos, New Mexico. This work was under the control of Robert Oppenheimer. Much of fissionable material for the bombs (uranium & plutonium) was produced at Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

during WW2 everyone was interested in developing an Atom bomb, The U.S. called its program the manhattan project. Scientists and military personel involved were kept in isolation, on high security "bases" . ( Interestingly, every "base" was planned and plotted out to look like small towns and had everything any small town or city would have to give the scientists and others the " normality " of everyday life.) It was a extremely massive project, and if it were not for the 2 A bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Millions more American and Japanese lives would have been lost when it came time for the US to invade Japan.
