It's very nice. Evanston is so close to Chicago that you can see the downtown skyline from some places in the suburb. The Metra trains and the L both run right through Evanston's downtown, so it feels like you're in Chicago. In fact, if you weren't told you weren't in Chicago, you probably would assume you were, what with the L trains! Downtown Evanston is great, with lots of shops and restaurants, and right by the lake, and there are young people everywhere due to Northwestern University, so it's quite safe day and night for the most part.
The disadvantage is, of course, that since it's such a nice place, it's expensive to rent there.

RE:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in Evanston, Illinois?
I am interested in relocating to Evanston, Illinois after the year 2009. Evanston is located north of Chicago in Cook County and although Evanston has a good amount of public transportation and is the home of Northwestern University, I do not know too many advantages and disadvantages of residing...

Overall, Evanston is a very nice town. Parts of Evanston are extremely wealthy as it is so close to the lake and not too far from the city, but there are also sections with high crime rates and gang activity. There are three Evanston stops on the Metra in addition to "L" stations so it is easy enough to get downtown. Because of Northwestern being so close, there are a lot of shops and restaurants nearby as well.

Evanston is a really beautiful place to live in. The neighborhoods are quiet at night, there's alot of peace and the houses are beautiful. It is kind of expensive but it's worth it.
The disadvantages is that the cops are kind of strict but they have to do their job to keep Evanston a nice suburb. I also heard that the cops are racist but I don't know if it's true.

Elgin is not the place to live if you have children. It is gang and drug infested. It is basically all minorities. It is very much run down like the other person said. Lots of homelessness. And they are mostly people who don't want to better themselves. They just want to hang out under the bridge and drink. The advantages, I guess would be the river boat, the Hemmens, and the new gym they have called the Centre. If I were you, I would take a little trip there and check it out first. Walk around the downtown.

Advantages: nice area, close to lake, close to the city, metra line takes you right into Chicago, many jobs within driving/commuting distance, not too far away from Wisconsin if you want to take a weekend trip up there
Disadvantages: cost of living is pretty high

Cost of living is very high. It's also very far away from downtown Chicago - it's certainly possible to take public or private transit and get there, but it does take awhile. But it's conveniently close to the lake and reasonably safe.

I've lived in and around Evanston my whole life, and my friends and I all hate it. It's full of panhandlers and beggars, and the cops just tickets cars like crazy. Plus it's now overbuilt, and the new condos and such are to tall for the area and smashed in. Plus people are ruder than in Chicago, and crime is high for the burbs. Murders, robberies, drive bys etc.Sorry to be so negative but it's true.
