Yes. The molecular structure of a diamond is much harder than the steel utilized in the hammer; Although, the weight and size of the hammer (force included) is more than sufficient to break a diamond.

FIRST - what's the diamond sitting on? the forces are such that the hammer may nicely press the diamond into the outdoors the position the diamond replaced into resting. If no longer, the likely prevalence is that the hammer will be dented. there's a small chance that the hammer blow will be on a fracture aspect, which may reason the diamond to split into a million or more beneficial products. the diamond should not be beaten.

"Hardness" in the context of materials means resistance to being SCRATCHED. If you hit a diamond with a hammer, you'll end up with some diamond dust and pieces of the original diamond. Better not do this with Mom's ring...

you never saw the commercial where the diamond cutter is cutting the diamond in the back of some sort of car. The cutter uses a kind of a knife but he hits it with a wooden mallet. If you hit it with a hammer it will definitely shatter. The little pieces will be hard and will cut glass, but they will be shattered pieces along shear lines of the crystal. BTW, a diamond will burn also and give CO2 and H2O.

no it will not, you know that diamond is the strongest matter known to man. its molecular structue consists of carbon atoms joined by single bonds, with no spare bonds or free electrons making it strong. diamonds are formed from coal which takes millions and millions of years.
